More than four in 10 Americans live in communities impacted by unhealthy levels of air pollution, much of which is generated by cars and power plants.

The good news is that by replacing vehicles that have internal combustible engines with electric vehicles, and fossil-fuel-burning power plants with renewable energy sources, we can reduce pollution and improve those health outcomes

On Monday, I joined meteorologists Stephanie Abrams and Jordan Steele on The Weather Channel’s climate-focused weekday show Pattrn to discuss a study by the American Lung Association that quantifies just how much specific pollutants would be reduced by a rapid shift to EVs and renewables. By 2050, nitrogen oxides, greenhouse gases and sulfur dioxides would be reduced by more than 90 percent, volatile organic compounds by 70 percent and particulate matter 2.5 by 61 percent. These reductions would result in more than $1 trillion in public health benefits.
